This month's tip is "How to Organise Your Scrap Space". Everyone's scrap space will vary in size and style and versatility. Whether it's an entire room or a small space in your bedroom, with a bit of planning and thought you can create the perfect environment that will inspire you to create.
The first step in creating a space of your own is to choose an area of your home that can be designated as your scrapbooking space. It is best to decide on any decorating themes or styles that you want to use before you begin buying materials. Choose a colour scheme (e.g. Red/black, Pink/Aqua ) or theme (e.g.Retro, Classic, Shabby Chic) and then buy containers, shelving, furniture or art work that reflects what you have choosen. If you are unsure or just want some inspiration, check out Design Magazines or websites to see what type of style you like.
Must Haves:
|
A desk. If space allows, get a long desk. You want to make sure you have enough space to spread everything out. You may want to get a separate smaller desk for your computer/ printer/ scanner etc.
| |
|
Magnetic or Cork Board. Allows you to display your finished pages, to-do-lists, quotes or favourite photos to inspire you etc.
| |
|
Storage Containers. Plastic, canvas, or metal bins, painted baskets or wooden boxes in an accent color create functional organizational containers that also serve as decorating pieces throughout the room.
| |
|
Lighting. Natural light is ideal during the day. At night a good desk light (with a white bulb) that provides light from above to minimise shadow is best.

Ideas:
Keep the items you need most frequently close to you on your desk (adhesives, markers, pens, cutters, scissors)
A large cutting mat on your desk will protect your desk from anything from paint & glue spills to craft knife cuts.
Use an expanding file for storing scrap paper and sort by colour to make it easier to see what you have available in scraps before reaching for a new sheet.
To store all your little embellishments, use organizers that have lots of little pull out drawers in small compartments that you may also label. Sort by colour, type or theme.
If you buy ribbons on spools use a piece of dowel to store them or sort them by colour, style or pattern and store them in clear glass jars.
Store your paper in storage boxes either by colour or type (e.g. Flowers, embossed, spots, stripes, vellum, embossed etc.)
Managing Your Space:
Maintaining your scrap space is important. Start each project with a clean space.
Go through your products regularly and throw out products you no longer want/like (or let your kids use them) .
