Phthalo Blue (PB15.3) is a powerful and vibrant transparent pigment from the Matisse Studio Series 1 range, offering unrivaled strength and clarity. Discovered in the early 20th century as a byproduct of an industrial experiment, this synthetic copper phthalocyanine pigment quickly gained fame for its deep jewel-toned brilliance, exceptional ASTM I lightfastness, and intense tinting ability.
Its cool greenish-blue undertone makes it ideal for creating vivid water, glass, and translucent effects. A staple for any artist’s palette, Phthalo Blue shines when used for glazing or layered depth, but should be mixed with care it’s potent enough to dominate other colours even in small amounts.
Highly versatile in colour mixing, it excels in generating a wide spectrum of greens. Pair with Aureolin or Transparent Yellow Oxide for rich forest tones, use Cadmium Yellow for brilliant synthetic greens, or combine with Iso Yellow and Cadmium Orange for nuanced olives. It also blends beautifully with Australian Sky Blue or Ghost Gum to produce luminous skies and shimmering water reflections.
