FAQs About Dies
1. What are “dies” (die-cutting dies)?
Dies are metal shapes used with a die-cutting machine (or manual press) to cut shapes from paper, cardstock, fabric, etc. They help create precise decorative shapes, frames, or motifs for cardmaking, scrapbooking, and other crafts.
2. Which materials can I cut with these dies?
Commonly: cardstock, paper, thin chipboard, vellum, thin adhesive foam, and sometimes thin metal foil. The success depends on your die, machine, and cutting sandwich setup.
3. Do I need a special machine to use dies?
Yes — dies are designed to be used with die-cutting machines or presses (manual or electronic) that apply pressure to push the die through the material. Without a machine or compatible tool, you can’t efficiently use dies.
4. What is the difference between “nested”, “frame”, and “standalone” dies?
- Nested dies: a set of progressively sized shapes (e.g. squares or circles) that fit inside each other.
- Frame dies: dies that cut a frame or border around a shape.
- Standalone dies: single decorative shape or motif dies (flowers, animals, letters, etc.).
5. Can I use dies with my existing embossing folders or machines?
It depends on the machine. Some die machines can also emboss; some embossing folders can be used in certain die machines. Always check compatibility (thickness, plate clearance, sandwich instructions).
6. How do I choose the correct “sandwich” or plate combination?
You follow the die machine’s instructions: layer of base plate, cutting mat, material, die (cutting side down/up depending on machine), top cutting pad. Many manufacturers publish sandwich recipes. If a die doesn’t cut fully, adjust by adding a shim or using a thinner mat.
7. What if the die doesn’t cut fully (incomplete cuts)?
- Try running it through again in the same or rotated direction.
- Add a shim (thin cardstock) to increase pressure.
- Use “kiss cutting” — lower pressure but repeated passes.
- Make sure your plates and mats are not too worn.
8. Do you ship dies internationally?
According to CraftOnline’s general shipping policy, they ship within Australia and to New Zealand. CraftOnline does not mention shipping dies to the Philippines or other countries in their FAQ.
9. What is the return or warranty policy for dies?
- Manufacturing defects must be reported within 3 days of receipt.
- For change-of-mind returns (unused, unopened), returns are accepted within 30 days. A restocking fee of 20% may apply.
- Some machines (and presumably associated tools) have one-year warranties; commercial use may void the warranty.
10. Can I pick up my order locally instead of shipping?
Yes. CraftOnline offers local pickup from their warehouse/showroom (in Sunshine Coast, QLD) during specified hours.
