Matisse Burnt Umber (Series 1) is a classic, deep earth tone with Renaissance roots, prized for its warm, chocolate richness and unmatched versatility. Though absent from early pigment manuals like Cennino Cennini’s 1437 treatise, Burnt Umber emerged just decades later as a studio essential, developed by roasting Raw Umber in kilns, a technique inspired by the process behind Burnt Sienna.
Matisse’s formulation uses calcined natural iron oxide (PBr7) to deliver a transparent, highly lightfast (ASTM I) paint perfect for glazes, shadows, and layering. Its warm undertone and natural earthiness make it a foundational color for portraiture, landscape, and realism, reliable for both fine detail and broad tonal depth.
In mixing, Burnt Umber is exceptionally adaptable:
Whether you're building atmospheric depth in figures or grounding a landscape with earthy tones, Burnt Umber remains one of the most indispensable colors in any artist’s palette.
