Matisse Cerulean Blue (Hue) (Series 1) brings the classic beauty of sky blue into the modern studio with enhanced durability and versatility. This semi-transparent, lightfast (ASTM I) acrylic hue is a blend of Phthalocyanine Blue, Titanium White, and Sodium Aluminosulphosilicate (PB15.3 / PW6 / PB29), faithfully recreating the spirit of historic Cerulean Blue without the cost or heaviness of cobalt-based pigments.
The word Cerulean originates from the Latin for "sky blue," and this colour has long captivated artists for its purity and tranquility. Originally synthesized in 1804 by French chemist Louis Jacques Thénard, Cerulean was rediscovered decades later for its exceptional fade resistance, thanks to its cobalt-tin foundation. Matisse Studio's Cerulean Blue Hue modernizes this pigment by offering a safe, cobalt-free alternative that maintains the visual brightness and mixing power artists love.
Though a touch deep on its own for full skies, Cerulean Blue Hue blends beautifully with Australian Sky Blue for nuanced gradients and luminous skies. Mixed with Phthalo Green, it produces oceanic turquoise tones, and with Cadmium Orange, it yields elegant greys. For expressive mauves and shadow tones, try it with Venetian Red, a testament to the pigment's adaptability across styles and subjects.
