Permanent Green Light (PY3 / PG7) is a vivid, semi-transparent green acrylic from the Matisse Studio Series 1 range, made from Arylide Yellow and Chlorinated Copper Phthalocyanine. This intense, modern green emerged in the 20th century, part of a new era of vibrant, non-toxic pigments that revolutionized art materials. Artists like Degas helped pave the way for these colours to be taken seriously, particularly through pastel work that expanded the spectrum of artistic expression.
Historically, the name “Permanent Green” has referred to a wide range of pigments from viridian blends to fugitive coal-tar dyes. By the 1930s, it was applied to Phthalo Green to evoke viridian’s prestige. When mixed with Yellow Light Hansa, it produced the striking Permanent Green Light we recognize today.
Though rarely found in nature, this luminous colour is widely seen in modern design appearing in ceramics, fashion, and automotive finishes. As a mixing colour, it performs beautifully:
This colour’s energy and versatility make it a vital addition to any palette focused on expressive, contemporary painting.
