Phthalo Green (PG7) is a vivid, transparent green pigment from the Matisse Studio Series 1 range, made from chlorinated copper phthalocyanine. Initially discovered in 1907 through an accidental laboratory reaction, the potential of phthalocyanine pigments went unnoticed until a 1935 rediscovery revealed their outstanding intensity and lightfastness. By modifying the molecule with chlorine, scientists transformed the original deep blue into a radiant green that would become a cornerstone of modern colour palettes.
Though artists initially preferred the muted elegance of Viridian, the rise of acrylic paints in the 1950s showcased Phthalo Green as a superior choice its ASTM I lightfastness, vibrant colour, and powerful tinting strength made it ideal for contemporary applications.
Highly versatile, Phthalo Green is perfect for colour mixing. Blend with Yellow Oxide for natural, subdued foliage tones or with Cadmium Yellow Medium to create vibrant Cadmium Green or Brunswick Green hues. For shadow work or unique darks, mix it with cool reds like Matisse Rose Madder to produce a rich, transparent black.
Whether you're glazing, layering, or blending, Phthalo Green delivers jewel-like depth and expressive range a must-have in any painter's collection.
