Prussian Blue (Hue) is a Series 1, transparent acrylic colour that pays homage to one of history’s most transformative pigments. First synthesized by accident in 1706 by Heinrich Diesbach, Prussian Blue was the world’s first modern synthetic pigment. It revolutionized the artist’s palette, replacing precious Ultramarine and fugitive Indigo, and famously appeared in works like Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
The original pigment, however, proved unstable in early acrylic formulations. In response, Matisse developed a more robust blend using Carbazole Dioxazine, Copper Phthalocyanine, and Carbon Black delivering the characteristic depth of historic Prussian Blue while ensuring compatibility with modern materials.
